I-65 Reconstruction & Widening
Nashville/Davidson County, TN
Built in 1968, Interstate 65 in north central Nashville had reached the end of its service life when the Tennessee Department of Transportation recognized the need to provide additional travel lanes along this route. After experiencing years of exponential growth in Middle Tennessee, the existing lanes were no longer adequate to serve the growing travel demands. Congestion, safety, noise and air quality were included as issues to be addressed by a widening project through the corridor. TDOT retained Florence & Hutcheson to provide:
- Functional Planning
- Interchange Modification Study
- Surveys
- Preliminary Plan Development
- Right of Way Plans
- Construction Plans
- Geotechnical for Retaining Walls and Noise Walls
- Public Information
- Construction Engineering & Inspection Services
The I-65 Widening project through Nashville provided additional travel lanes while minimizing impacts to the existing properties and traffic along the route. For this 6.8 mile urban interstate project involving the reconstruction and widening of 6 lanes to 10 lane, concrete pavement was utilized under new award winning performance specifications to ensure quality and reliability for years of service. Old bridges were reconstructed to accommodate the widened facility and to update the structures to modern standards. Noise barriers (by Bowlby) were added to increase the quality of life of adjacent residences and Intelligent Transportation Systems (by GS&P) were installed to increase safety and mobility of the facility and the overall Nashville Area transportation system.
