Ashley Woods Lake Dam

Buncombe County, NC

The Ashley Woods Lake Dam is a small
earthen dam that has been incorporated into a new residential subdivision. The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) Division of Land Resources Land Quality Section Asheville Regional Office performed a visual inspection of the dam and issued a Notice of Deficiency, which indicates that the dam has been reclassified as a small high-hazard dam due to its height and the residential structures located downstream.

F&H has been contracted to inspect and evaluate the existing dam and prepare design documents to be permitted through the NCDENR to correct the existing deficiencies. The main deficiencies include significant seepage through the earthen embankment and frequent activation of the vegetated emergency spillway.

A siphon system has been designed to provide additional spillway capacity and provide a method for draining the reservoir. In addition, a blanket and toe drain will be installed to control seepage through the embankment. The documents will include a design report, technical specifications and construction drawings. Preliminary design documents are being reviewed by NCDENR.
