Adkin Branch Stream Restoration
Lenoir County, NC
F&H is providing design, engineering and construction management services for one of the Ecological Enhancement Program’s (EEP) most challenging and expensive projects to date.
Adkin Branch has a drainage area of 5.5 mi. while the UT has a drainage area of 0.12 mi. Both watersheds are contained within the limits of the City of Kinston which is a densely populated area. Both are sand bed streams located in the Coastal Plain physiographic province in the Neuse River Basin.
The project requires extensive coordination with the City of Kinston, EEP, the North Carolina State Property Office and affected property owners (over100 parcels were incorporated into the project). The proposed channel for Adkin Branch is designated as a B5 type stream, which will allow the stream to dissipate the energy of flashy urban storm flows through bed form (pools) rather than plan form.
The B5 channel type was used to minimize earthwork excavation due to the severity of channel incision and because of constrained easement bounds that do not allow for large belt widths. One large stormwater wetland was designed that collects flow from the tributary during lower than bankfull discharges. Additionally, nine sand filter Best Management Practice Managements (BMPs) were designed to be retrofitted on existing drainage structures to filter pollutants from adjacent urban developments. Project assessment, documentation, design and construction documents are complete.
The project has been bid with mid-year construction scheduled.
