Design-Build - Western Wake Freeway
Wake County, NC
Western Wake is the first toll facility in North Carolina and includes 12.6 miles of new location roadway. The project has been planned to provide a high speed, multi-lane, controlled–access freeway to accommodate the increasing transportation demand in the western Wake County area.
This Design-Build project is a portion of the Triangle Expressway and extends from NC 55 at Old Smithfield Road to NC 55 near Alston Avenue, a distance of approximately 12.6 miles. The proposed roadway consists of a new 6-lane divided toll facility with a 78-foot median.
For consistency with the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s project descriptions, Western Wake has been separated into three sections: Section A begins at NC 55 near Old Smithfield Road and extends westward to east of US 1, a distance of approximately 2.0 miles; Section B extends from east of US 1 to north of Olive Chapel Road, a distance of approximately 3.3 miles; and Section C extends from north of Olive Chapel Road to NC 55 near Alston Avenue, a distance of approximately 7.3 miles.
Florence & Hutcheson services include:
- Roadway Design – including one new half-cloverleaf interchange and final construction of partially completed full-cloverleaf interchange
- Structural Design – including the design of 7 bridges
- Traffic Engineering – including preparation of the Traffic Control Plans and Final Pavement Marking Plans for approximately 4 miles of the third section.
In addition, F&H is responsible for the Geotechnical Investigation for the Structure Foundations for all three sections of the project.
