Relocation of I-85 around Spartanburg

South Carolina’s section of I-85 is 106 miles long, part of a route from Montgomery, AL, to Petersburg, VA. Providing SDCOT the design and ancillary engineering services for relocation of I-85 around Spartanburg entailing construction of approximately 10 miles of 6-lane interstate highway relocation and approximately 5 miles of upgrading of existing I-85 on each end of the relocation. The total project length was approximately 15 miles. Preliminary planning and location studies were required for alignment details and in-depth studies of 7 interchanges including a 3-level directional type interchange with existing I-26. Right-of-way and construction plans were developed for 5 construction contract sections. One contract included the paving of 6 lanes with full 12 feet shoulders and 12 inch plain dowel joint pavement for the full length of the relocation.

The project involved the design of bridges at 19 sites, including:

• Numerous Roadway Overpass and Underpass Bridges
