SC-14 – Single Point Urban Interchange

Greenville County, SC

This SC-14 Widening project consisted of widening one mile of SC-14 from 2 — 7 lanes, relocation and improvement of 2 miles of side roads, and interchange reconstruction at I-85.

The project ties to a 7-lane section of SC-14 to the North and to a 5-lane section to the South. Florence & Hutcheson’s design replaced the standard diamond type interchange with a Single Point Urban Interchange — the first of its type to be incorporated into a bridge in South Carolina.

The superstructure of the hourglass-shaped bridge is comprised of splayed structural steel plate girders with one piece w-beam diaphragms. The concrete deck is reinforced with galvanized rebar for corrosion protection. Due to significant multi-directional forces at the end bents, elastomeric bearings and silicon joint seals were used in lieu of integral construction.
