NC I-85 (Design-Build) Corridor Improvement
Davidson County, NC
The I-85 Corridor Improvement Project is presently North Carolina’s number one mobility project. It will bring comprehensive upgrades to the highway, bridge and rail infrastructure located along a vital stretch of I-85 in Davidson and Rowan counties. The $201.5 million project plays a critical role in not only addressing current transportation needs, but also in meeting the travel demands of the future. These improvements to I-85 will bolster regional, statewide and interstate commerce and economic development, as well as allow for more efficient evacuation during natural disasters or matters of national security.
Florence & Hutcheson serves as lead designer for all construction plans for Phase Two of the I-85 Corridor Improvement Project. The $65.5 million project includes widening 3.8 miles of I-85 existing 4-lane divided facility to an 8-lane divided facility with a 46 median from north of the NC 150 interchange to just north of I-85 Business in Davidson County. The scope also includes reconstruction of the Belmont Road interchange. Construction began in May 2011 with projected completion in May 2013.
The design highlights include maintaining existing traffic patterns during removal and replacement of the existing interstate pavement requiring four phases of intricate traffic control plans. Structures work includes the removal of the existing Clark Road interchange and replacement of the existing 2-lane bridge to a 5- lane structure at Belmont Road. The relocation of existing Belmont Road resulted in 400,000 CY of borrow material. Construction access to the median will be via earthen ramps from the existing structure at Clark Road and the proposed structure at Belmont Road resulting in a safer construction zone.
