Bridge Inspection and Repair
Various Counties, TN
This project was an indefinite delivery contract that lasted from 2006-2010 and consisted of bridge repair designs and underwater bridge inspections. Examples of bridge repair projects include:
• SR311 over I-75 in Bradley County is a four-span 300-foot launched reinforced concrete deck girder structure which required the phased deck repair at a tight diamond interchange with heavy traffic volume requiring I-75 and SR311 lane closures.
• I-40 over the French Broad River in Jefferson County is a eight span 2411-foot long two unit continuous steel deck truss with a maximum 312 foot span. Sway frame stabilizers were installed, miscellaneous steel superstructure members were repaired and isolated repairs were made to the deck requiring phased construction traffic control. A very thorough hands-on inspection of the bearings and research of replacement options aided in the final design of bearing replacements. A detour plan was provided for the bearing replacements.
• Eight bridges on I-124 in Hamilton County were repaired under heavy traffic within the city of Chattanooga. All bridges were repaired simultaneously. This required four phases of construction and a complex maintenance of traffic design. Of the bridges repaired: a saddle detail was devised to support a deteriorated prestressed box beam to avoid the high cost of removal and replacement; extensive substructure repairs; provided details for deck repairs with concrete overlay and asphalt overlay with bridge deck sealant; a variety of bridge joint repairs; and details for repair of collision damage which included heat straightening a rolled steel beam,
• SR2 over the Hiwassee River in Bradley County required a scour repair using grout filled bags for two 70 foot tall piers in 25 feet of water. A shoulder and lane closure provided the contractor room to work from the deck.
