Oregon Inlet Bridge Inspection

Dare County, NC

In 2010, Florence & Hutcheson was selected by NCDOT to conduct a routine inspection and load rating of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over the Oregon Inlet on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

F&H was charged with structural analysis and load rating of the entire superstructure, consisting of concrete deck on prestressed AASHTO girders, cored slab units, and a 3-span continuous steel girder high level channel crossing.

The original construction of the bridge was completed in April 1964. Extensive repairs have been done over the years to correct scour of the substructure and damage due to vessel impact.

In 2006, F&H was part of a team that provided an in-depth inspection for this bridge including repair recommendations to extend the life of the bridge until it can be replaced. The new inspection showed that the recommended repairs are near completion and will increase the life of the bridge approximately 10 years. A design-build project to replace this structure has been awarded and construction is expected to begin in late 2010.

Our overall services included field evaluation, full color report with condition photos, repair recommendations, structural and load rating analysis and project management.
