Community Involvement

Caring for our communities is a fundamental value at Florence & Hutcheson. We have a rich legacy of sharing ideas, man-power, volunteer hours, supplies, scholarships, and financial resources to help not-for-profit organizations accomplish their goals. Whether it's helping with natural disaster recovery or taking an active role in programs that make our neighborhoods better places to live, caring for others is the heart and soul of our organization.

Florence & Hutcheson supports MathCounts. Sponsored by the American Society of Professional Engineers, the MATHCOUNTS program is designed to increase junior high school student participation and interest in mathematics and motivate these students toward technology careers. Sponsored by osob, F&H / Huntsville’s Vincent Hellens proctored for this year’s competition where 5 local schools and 32 students competed. For more information, go to http://www.alspe.com/mathcounts.html

The staff of F&H/Paducah has supported Kentucky MathCount Competitions for 19 years, providing generous financial and employee hours. Volunteers set up the competition site, provide food and beverages, trophies, scoring, competition proctoring, and coordination for advancing competitors to go to State. Volunteers also solicit funds from local consulting firms and industries to pay for prizes to students and stipends for team coaches. Ed Bach has been the Mathcounts Kentucky Lake Chapter Coordinator for seven years. All middle schools from the 13 counties participate, and the top two schools and two individuals advance to the State Competition. The top individual at KY Chapter level wins a $500 cash scholarship payable at high school graduation. Student winners at State get a full tuition ride at the University of Louisville or the University of Kentucky. For more information, go to http://kyengcenter.org/.

“I think MathCounts is the single best outreach program sponsored by consulting firms.” Mr. Ed Bach

Relay For Life is a fun-filled event that F&H participates in across the company. Designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of the American Cancer Society, teams gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. Teams come together to build community spirit, to honor loved ones and fight cancer and have fun in the process.

Heartworks Ministry provides a safe-haven for inner city youth and valuable lessons to lead a successful adult life. Each year Florence & Hutcheson staff in Columbia, SC work several days to help “clean-up” the Heartworks facility. Fences are built, walls painted, flowers potted, debris removed, and areas are scrubbed and cleaned.

At Christmas 2008, the Heartworks children visited F&H. Funds were donated by F&H to ensure every child had an all weather jacket. After a serenade of Christmas carols, the children gathered for a photo to show off their new jackets. For more information visit www.heartworksministry.org

Florence & Hutcheson continuously supports the United Service Organizations (USO). The staff of our Raleigh office donated bottled water at the USO Tent for Relief during the Navy vs. Duke game, when many military and family members joined to support Navy.
Excess furniture and office supply items resulting from the merger of Ko and F&H were donated to the USO Center which serves 2,500 members of military and their families each month.
F&H/Raleigh made a monetary donation to support the upcoming USO Gala, which recognizes local North Carolina heroes. One service member from each branch of service will be recognized at the event which focuses on recognizing our brave men and women in uniform serving in or deployed from North Carolina and chosen by local commanders.
The USO is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the troops by providing morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The original intent of Congress and the enduring style of USO delivery is to represent the American people by extending a touch of home to the military. Service members and their families visit USO centers worldwide more than 6.9 million times each year. The USO is the way the American public supports the troops. The Kid’s City Program was developed in South Carolina and has been implemented in Rutherford County since 1999. It is designed to be used as a teaching tool in the elementary and high schools by combining classroom instruction with real life experience. Students have the opportunity to learn about civic responsibility and decision making in local government. Students then put that learning into practice by building a “City”. The two day event is open to 3rd grade classes and high school government classes where the 3rd graders build the city and the high school government classes act as city officials. Volunteers for this two day event include engineers, planners, elected officials, architects, real estate developers, realtors, city and county officials and other citizens interested in children and their education. F&H Murfreesboro has provided volunteers for this event for the past three years, two of which have been as primary sponsor of the event.

Florence & Hutcheson’s Murfreesboro office participated in a community volunteer event on November 20th and 21st by lending a hand in the planting of thousands of native trees and shrubs along a quarter-mile stretch of the Stones River Greenway in Murfreesboro. The City of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department hosted this two-day Greenway restoration project where hundreds of volunteers turned out with shovels and other garden tools to join together in restoring tree and stream vegetation that were destroyed by an F4 tornado, passing through northwestern portions of Murfreesboro and destroying everything in its path on April 10, 2009 (Good Friday).

On November 3, 2010 the Columbia, SC branch of F&H spent the day at Carolina Children’s Home decorating the Organization’s Counseling Center and restoring a basketball court.

Each waiting room in the Counseling Center was decorated specifically for the special people who will spend time there. The ladies of F&H devoted their time to the Children’s Waiting Room where they created an “Under the Sea” motif complete with a magical mural of waves, fish and sun that will surely bring smiles to the children’s faces. Others focused their efforts on a zin-like waiting room with a water feature where older visitors who need a quiet soothing environment can wait peacefully. The conference room and foyer also received a bright new coat of paint and new blinds to create a more welcoming atmosphere.

The outdoor team spent the day outside in the cold and rain revamping an overgrown basketball court and trimming hedges. The basketball court was a fierce jungle the volunteers quickly conquered with the help of Mojo and Billy’s landscaping skills and tools. The day proved to be a memorable day for the Children’s Home and F&H employees.
